About Community Solutions:

Community Solutions is seeking an experienced, self-motivated and organized individual to join the energetic, collaborative Built for Zero Team as a System Improvement Advisor. This position will be responsible for supporting communities in building cross-sector prevention systems and driving progress on key measures towards achieving racially equitable, population-level reductions in homelessness. Quality improvement (also called improvement science) is the primary organizing framework for all of this work.

This position is primarily responsible for the delivery, documentation and replication best practices with communities participating in the Housing Stabilization Learning Cohort in the Upstream Strategies portfolio. This work will intersect with communities participating in the Healthcare, Public Health and People with Lived Experience pilots, and those in other Built for Zero portfolios.

Position Overview:

The successful System Improvement Advisor will design evaluation and learning projects by regularly gathering, analyzing and harvesting insights from local community performance data. In response to this data, they may execute, or support the execution of strategies that are critical tools for ending homelessness measurably and equitably in communities, as appropriate. The successful system Improvement Advisor will be skilled in applying rigorous mixed methods to support continuous improvement of our cross sector strategies.

The candidate of our dreams is organized, but not rigid—a “get stuff done” kind of person who can work out a plan of action quickly in the face of ambiguity and changing information (this environment offers a lot of both. We’re looking for the sort of person who finds problem solving and complex implementation fun and who prides themselves on seeing multiple paths to the same outcome. You should be dedicated and clear-eyed about what it takes to make a difference for some of the most vulnerable people in our societies, and you should understand how racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression structure and impede that work. You should have experience working on the ground in communities, facilitating collective problem-solving, and analyzing and synthesizing data. You should also demonstrate a high level of empathy and flexibility, which will be critical to ensuring successful collaboration with partnering organizations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify learning opportunities and develop processes to support ongoing organizational learning and knowledge dissemination
  • Clearly and compellingly document and present on Built for Zero learning, methods, outcomes, and project offerings
  • Support, leverage and strengthen existing leadership structures and engage new partners where necessary, including engagement and support of BIPOC partners and those with lived experience of homelessness
  • Build will for sustainable participation and change in communities
  • Build sustainable capacity in critical problem solving areas
  • Leverage the quality improvement process to help communities
  • Surface and clarify key barriers and levers
  • Support excellent strategy, execution and culture across the Built for Zero team
  • Scope and support the implementation of transformational projects, including
    • Pass-through investments
    • Real estate projects
    • Partnerships with adjacent sectors and institutions (e.g. behavioral health, criminal justice, etc.)
    • Other time-bound pilots and research projects.
  • Center user experience in design and execution of projects, and regularly coordinate across Built for Zero teams
  • Present summary reports, presentations and findings to both internal and external audiences
  • Ensures an equity lens on all documentation and learning, and and makes concrete, data-informed recommendations on how we can further advance equity in all work
  • Other duties as assigned, to advance the efforts of Built for Zero

Professional Experience and Qualifications:

  • Five to seven years previous work experience in a professional environment
  • Experience with a public health agency, homelessness response system, community based direct service organization or systems upstream of homelessness is preferred
  • Passion for justice, equity, ending homelessness and the belief it is possible
  • Understanding of the quality improvement or improvement science and experience applying the methodology to process and/ro systems change
  • Experience with facilitation, public speaking, and coaching for improvement
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment and demonstrate a willingness to shift easily between various responsibilities with diverse stakeholders
  • Strong project management skills, as evidenced by leading projects to successful and measurable completion
  • Demonstrated understanding of structural racism and its impact on communities of color
  • Collaborative work ethic and a high tolerance for feedback, direct communication, and proactive conflict resolution

Position and Salary

This position is grant-funded for two years with potential for renewal.

CS offers competitive salaries and benefits packages for every position. The salary range for this position is between $76,634 and $95,793. The actual salary is commensurate with the candidate's experience.

Work Environment:

This position can be located anywhere in the continental United States. The Built for Zero team has office space in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York City, but the position provides for the flexibility to work from a remote location without the standard support available at an office if such an arrangement meets the needs of Community Solutions.

Travel Requirements:
Up to 5 days of travel per month may be required to attend team retreats, strategy meetings, funder meetings, community visits, Learning Sessions with partners and community teams, and other on-site convenings.
