Community Solutions is a hardworking team of social problem solvers working to end homelessness and the conditions that create it. The Built for Zero team works with about 125 communities across the US and around the world to build a movement to end chronic and veteran homelessness. Nine communities have already achieved functional zero, effectively ending local veteran and/or chronic homelessness.

We are seeking a detail-oriented, self-motivated and organized individual to join the Data Team on the energetic, collaborative Built for Zero team at Community Solutions. This position reports to the Built for Zero Data Analysis Lead. They will be responsible for building and supporting data visualizations for internal Built for Zero staff and communities, providing analytical and quantitative support to all members of the Built for Zero team, and will assist with the analysis, research and reporting of Built for Zero performance metrics. Travel will be required to attend semi-annual team retreats and other on-site trainings and convenings.

Defining Success for this Position:

  • Data visualizations and tools are structured clearly and coherently, both on the user-oriented “front end” and in the data architecture “back end,” and are revised as needed or determined by team strategy
  • Built for Zero staff members have the tools/dashboards/data analysis they need to understand, evaluate, and improve their work and to support communities working to end homelessness
  • All questions and concerns about products and tools are addressed in a timely, thorough and efficient manner - from both internal and external audiences

Candidate Description:

The candidate of our dreams is organized, but not rigid–– a person who can work out a plan of action quickly in the face of ambiguity and changing information (this environment offers a lot of both). We’re looking for the sort of person who finds problem solving and complex implementation fun and who prides themselves on seeing multiple paths to the same outcome. You should come to work everyday with a desire to serve and assist your teammates as they serve local change agents in communities around the world. You should also see your job as enabling results, not just hitting deadlines or budgetary targets. (If our brilliant plan is actually really dumb, we expect you to tell us–– and propose a better one!)

Clear and actionable data should be your bread and butter, since you’ll be helping to ensure that more than 70 different communities can visualize and track data necessary to ending homelessness. You’ll provide data visualization and data management expertise to a national cohort of vanguard communities. Having a detail-oriented, thorough and fast paced approach to scoping, building, and refining data structures/visuals will be the name of the game for this position. You’ll also support a growing Data Team in research and data consultation capacities, as we work collaboratively and cross-train in related work streams frequently.

Finally, you should be dedicated and clear-eyed about what it takes to make a difference for some of the most vulnerable people in our societies. This work is hard, and our team is relentlessly committed to rigor, measurement and provable impact. You’ll work long and hard like the rest of us, and every day, you’ll have the satisfaction of contributing to a meaningful outcome that is owned by our whole team. Your title will be Tableau Specialist, but when people ask you what you do, we hope you’ll learn to say, “I’m helping 70 communities end homelessness for good.”
