Job Overview:

United for Brownsville (UB) is looking for a full-time Early Intervention (EI) Ambassador to become the go-to person for EI in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn. The EI Ambassador will:

  1. Educate families to reduce stigma about EI.
  2. Guide families through the EI referral process.
  3. Be a liaison between families and service providers.

This position is supported through 2020; an extended term is contingent upon the success of fundraising as well as the success of the EI Ambassador’s work.

About United for Brownsville:

UB is a partnership between SCO Family of Services and Community Solutions, which have deep roots in the community providing essential services to families and children, preventing homelessness and gentrification, and spurring collaboration. UB is an innovative, community-driven initiative dedicated to improving the early childhood system in one Brooklyn neighborhood. Local residents and health, educational, and social-service providing professionals act as a think tank that creates equitable opportunities and outcomes for the 3,500 infants and toddlers in Brownsville.

UB has been building community and an infrastructure for change since early 2018, when it began by asking families what their aspirations for young children were and the improvements needed to let children succeed. Among those priorities were racial inequities in access to EI services, from which the position of the Early Intervention Ambassador emerged. UB’s other work includes projects that directly and indirectly improve language and social-emotional developmental outcomes for children, such as grass-roots literacy projects and weekend educational programming.

Defining Success for this Position:

The EI ambassador is a new position that will be an integral part of a team working to improve the way children in Brownsville progress through the EI referral process. The team’s specific goals are to:

  1. Increase rates of referral to Early Intervention (EI) for black children compared to their citywide counterparts of any race.
  2. Increase rates of follow-through on those referrals to the evaluation stage for black and Hispanic children compared to their citywide counterparts of any race.


Success will mean contributing to the improvement of these referral and evaluation rates in Brownsville as well as the specific referral experiences of families and service providers engaged by the EI Ambassador.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Establish yourself as a trusted messenger and liaison for service providers and residents in Brownsville who are impacted by EI.
    • Become the go-to person in the community for families with children referred to EI, leading them through the process to ensure that children who would benefit from services receive them in a timely fashion.
    • Become the go-to person in the community for providers making EI referrals for their clients, particularly for providers who are experiencing difficulty communicating with families or who are unable to manage the referrals on their own.
  • Establish relationships with key stakeholders in Early Intervention (EI) in Brownsville. This list includes:
    • Families of children who may be developmentally delayed and families of children referred to Early Intervention
    • PAT members and other social, health, and educational service providers serving the community who already make or would like to make referrals to EI
    • EI service providing agencies operating in and around Brownsville
    • The Bureau of Early Intervention at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
    • Advocacy organizations like Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York and Advocates for Children

Qualifications:

  • Must haves:
    • Experience working or living in Brownsville, Brooklyn, or nearby communities and the ability to be a relentless promoter of and advocate for EI services in Brownsville.
    • Personal or professional experience with Early Intervention.
    • An excellent verbal communicator who is equally comfortable speaking with physicians, children, custodial grandparents, and everyone else touched by this work.
    • Reliable and prompt — the window for addressing developmental delays between 0 and 36 months is narrow.
    • A detailed record-keeper who knows or is able to learn how to use: Gmail, Google Spreadsheets, Google Hangouts, Google Docs, and the other means of communication and record keeping.

  • Bonuses (not required):

    • Coursework or employment in health, mental health, education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, related fields, or Early Intervention.
    • Two or more years of full-time work experience in an office, educational, medical, sales, or other setting.

Salary Range:

CS offers competitive salaries and benefits packages for every position. The salary range for this position starts at $48,000 and will be based upon experience.

Travel Requirements:

The EI Ambassador will be expected to travel regularly (25-50%) within the neighborhood of Brownsville to meet with families, physicians, education providers, mental health professionals, and social services agencies.

Work Environment:

The Early Intervention Ambassador will report to the Co-Director of United for Brownsville for Community Solutions and will be an employee of Community Solutions. This position will be based out of United for Brownsville’s offices at the Gregory Jackson Center.
